InsideOUT’s Shift Hui 2020 canceled

Statement prepared by Jean Sergent-Shadbolt

March 19 2020

It is with enormous disappointment that InsideOUT has to announce the cancellation of our upcoming Shift Hui.

While we are disappointed, it is the right decision given the national response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and as Shift is a gathering with very close prolonged contact it would be too risky to go ahead.

We are working behind the scenes to see what we can come up with to offer an online mini hui. Watch this space for more information.

Any rangatahi who have already booked travel to come to the hui are encouraged to seek a refund from the bus, train, or airline company involved. InsideOUT will provide any written support for these claims that is needed.

The most important part of Shift Hui is the friendships and connections it creates. Young people who are part of the Shift Hui community are encouraged to reach out to each other to process this decision and keep those friendships strong. You’re welcome to use this group as a space to connect further with each other.

At this point it is unlikely we will be able to postpone Shift to later in the year, but should this happen we will let you know as soon as we can. We definitely anticipate Shift Hui will return in 2021, and rangatahi who applied this year will be given priority to attend.

More to follow regarding the digital hui, and you are welcome to share any ideas you have regarding this with us.

In the meantime, we encourage you to think about how you can look after your mental health and be a support to those around you. We know the situation with COVID-19 is causing a lot of stress and anxiety for many people, and it’s important to stay connected, informed from valid sources and to be taking care of ourselves the best we can. A reminder that you can free call or text 1737 at any time to speak with a trained counsellor – it’s free and confidential. Similarly you can call 0800 OUTLINE between 6-9pm any day to speak to a volunteer counsellor from the rainbow community. Statement regarding COVID-19 pandemic response and Shift Hui

Prepared by Jean Sergent-Shadbolt, March 16 2020

Kia ora

This is a statement regarding the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), and InsideOUT’s annual Shift Hui.

The advice from the World Health Organisation and New Zealand’s Ministry of Health is that prevention, delay, and containment of COVID-19 is the top priority.

Staff and volunteers at InsideOUT are keeping a close eye on the development of policy regarding COVID-19. We are keenly aware of our duty of care towards rangatahi that we work with, our volunteers, and communities we come into contact with.

Shift Hui is still planning to go ahead, at this stage. The dates are 17-20 April. InsideOUT staff are being optimistic that the delay and containment measures taken in Aotearoa will lead to a safe environment to hold Shift Hui. We will have a risk management plan in place to manage any risks at the hui, and will continue to follow public health advice.

However, we will not go ahead if it is not safe to do so.

Our advice for young people who are planning to attend Shift Hui this year, and their families, is to plan for the best with caution.

We recommend:

  • Booking fully refundable travel
  • Self-isolate where possible
  • If you are fundraising, let people know you plan to use the money for the hui next year if 2020 is cancelled, or that you will donate or return the funds
  • Get the flu vaccine when it becomes available at your school, university, or workplace; or through your doctor or pharmacy. The flu vaccine does not protect you against COVID-19 but it will protect you from influenza, which could make you more vulnerable to COVID-19.

Because plans could change at any point, keeping an attitude of optimistic flexibility is key – that’s certainly what we’re doing at InsideOUT!

If Shift Hui goes ahead, young people and volunteers who are ill in the week before the hui must stay home.

Shift Hui takes place on a marae, and it is important that we as manuhiri to the marae don’t bring any illness onto the whenua.

We will update our information and our decisions regarding Shift when there are any significant changes. If you have any further questions or concerns, please contact shift@insideout.org.nz

Welcome to Shift Hui

Shift Hui is an annual gathering for young people of minority sexualities, genders, and sex characteristics. Shift Hui is run by InsideOUT Kōaro. InsideOUT works to give rainbow young people in Aotearoa New Zealand a sense of safety and belonging in their schools and communities.

Shift Hui happens every April school holidays at the beautiful Horouta Ki Poneke Marae (Ngati Porou) in Porirua.

Over four days and three nights, young people at the hui will experience a rich variety of workshops and panels, addressing issues of rainbow life in Aotearoa.

Activities such as crafting, writing workshops, movie night, and the final night talent show further enrich the atmosphere and experience of Shift Hui.

Rainbow young people aged 15-20 are encouraged to attend, and we have volunteer programmes especially designed for young people aged 18-24 to provide experience in the coordination of a big event like Shift Hui.

Please apply to join us at Shift 2020 as either an attendee or a volunteer.
